red-lobsterRed Lobster, which is owned by Darden Restaurants, may be  joining the ranks of allergy-aware restaurants. In a recent test program at select locations, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Red Lobster has created a list  to help diners who are allergic to “Big Eight” allergens, in what Darden’s Director of Media and Communications Mark Jaronski called “a natural next step in [Darden’s] commitment to transparency.”  And it looks like the allergen list may be hitting all Red Lobster locations soon.  Jaronski emailed us to say, “We are pleased with the feedback we’ve received thus far, and plan to continue to expand the number of restaurants where we offer an allergen menu.”

While we’re glad to see Red Lobster addressing allergens, including wheat, in its menu, other gluten sources (barley, rye, oats) could remain off of the radar. Please let CEO Clarence Otis know that you’d like to see gluten added to the allergen list.  Leave your message for Mr. Otis in the comments section of our blog; we’ll collect these comments and forward them on.

The good news is that while Red Lobster may not being considering full gluten-free accommodations right now, other Darden Restaurants have.  For example, The Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide reports that many Olive Garden locations offer pre-packaged gluten-free pasta with red sauce, and that The Capital Grille has an extensive gluten-free list.

We hope Red Lobster will offer a full gluten-free menu (or, dare we hope, gluten-free biscuits) in the near future. But meanwhile, check out Tiffany’s gluten-free version of Red Lobster’s famous Cheddar Bay Biscuits. They are delicious.
