Some foods are just meant for each other.
Peanut butter and jelly. Macaroni and cheese. Chips and salsa…
But chocolate and pretzels are one of my all-time favorite combinations. Hand-dipped pretzels have been my go-to party dish since college. With holidays and potlucks just around the corner, there are few things easier to make (or more delicious) than this crunchy snack.
Unfortunately, gluten-free pretzels are hard to come by, as pretzels are usually made from wheat flour.
So when Glutino sent us a free sample of their Gluten-Free Pretzel Twists (made instead with Corn Starch, Potato Starch, Palm Oil, Sugar, Sea Salt, Cellulose Gum, Soy Lecithin, Sodium Bicarbonate, Yeast Extract, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Citric Acid, and Sodium Hydroxide), I figured it was time to start dipping!
If you’ve never dipped pretzels before, don’t worry, the process is simple. I consulted the Essential Gluten-Free Grocery Guide to find gluten-free baking chocolate and gluten-free sprinkles (optional) to accompany the pretzels.
Here was my shopping list, although you can use any gluten-free items for this project:
- Glutino Gluten Free Pretzel Twists
- Baker’s Semi-Sweet all-purpose chocolate
- Cake Mate Sprinkles
- Wax Paper
First, lay out the wax paper on a flat surface with plenty of room to work. I commandeered the dining room table for this task.
Next, melt the chocolate. If you’re fancy you can use a double-boiler, but since I’m not trying out for Top Chef: Just Desserts, I used the microwave. Follow the package directions for melting chocolate.
Then dip away! After dipping, let each pretzel set on the wax paper. After you’ve dipped all of the pretzels, you can follow up with sprinkles in the most appropriate motif (I chose pumpkins and bats in anticipation of Halloween, but team colors would suit your next tailgate party).
By far the hardest part of this process is waiting for the chocolate to harden. When I made these pretzels, they took two, long, mouth-watering hours to set.
The Glutino Gluten Free Pretzel Twists held up well to their chocolate bath, and even gluten-eaters enjoyed the sweet-salty contrast. It’s a winning combination we all can enjoy!
