We interrupt our normal Thanksgiving program to bring you this important bulletin:
There are gluten-free cupcakes in Disney World.
The internet is abuzz lately, because Babycakes just opened a third location. Not only is it in Downtown Disney, it’s taken the place of a McDonalds.
Yup, you heard right. The happiest place on earth just got a little happier for those of us with what Babycakes founder Erin McKenna refers to as, “persnickety diets”. No word yet on whether or not Mickey’s been diagnosed with celiac.
Apparently they’re still putting the finishing touches on things, but the kitchen is up and running. And really, isn’t that the most important part?
Goods on offer include cakes of both the cup and standard varieties, muffins, pies, cookies, and other homey treats. Unlike the other two locations, where some clearly-labeled items are made with spelt, the Orlando branch is entirely gluten-free (Thanks, Emily W, for the info!). Most items are also free of refined sugar, casein and soy. Because everything is vegan, everything is also egg-free and dairy-free. And as if that weren’t enough merit badges for one girl scout, Babycakes website also states that they are certified kosher.
And, they took the place of a McDonalds. I’m very glad that people visiting Disney World have access to safe treats, and it speaks well of Disney that they recognized our demographic, etc. etc. Mostly, though, I’m just tickled pink that an indie shop won out over such an international behemoth. How’s that for sweet?
