I think I may have mentioned this one or twenty times in the past: I love it when people send me delicious things in the mail. Especially when I’ve forgotten that said delicious thing is on its way, and so one day a package just arrives with my name on it.
The most recent example? Baba Joon’s Chocolate Chewies. Yum. This photo of the bag doesn’t really do them justice, but also I ate them too quickly to get a decent photograph. Sorry folks.
So: what is a Baba Joon? What are Chocolate Chewies?
Baba is the word for father in many languages, so I think it’s a pretty safe assumption that Baba Joon is the bald man on the packaging (to the right):
A chocolate chewie (or chewy) is a one-or-two bite little burst of delicious. They fall into the family of egg white and cocoa cookies, a family I happen to love for the way it brings together the best parts of cookies and meringues and macaroons.
The three flavors I tried were all delicious: Walnut, Coconut, and Apricot. Lest you wonder where the chocolate is: fear not. They ALL are made with cocoa and they are all nicely chocolatey. And chewy. Really, it’s a very apt name. Of course, it goes without saying that we wouldn’t be reviewing them here if they weren’t gluten-free. The ingredients are Powdered Sugar, Egg Whites, Cocoa, GF Vanilla, Salt, and whatever other things are needed for the flavor in question: California walnuts, crystallized ginger, dried apricots, you get the idea. Delicious things.
It’s worth noting that none of the flavors are vegan because they rely on eggs, but that they are dairy-free and grain-free.
My standout favorite was the apricot, because it’s such a rare flavor combination to see. Why is that? Apricot and chocolate go together beautifully and these cookies are perfect proof.
I ate all the apricot ones before I got a chance to share them, but the friends who got to taste the other two gluten-free flavors didn’t seem to mind: they were all delicious.
If you are in the Bay Area in California you might be lucky enough to find a package of Chocolate Chewies at a market near you. For most of us, though, the internet is our oyster. Baba Joon’s Chocolate Chewies are available via their website, and many of the flavors are even on sale right now. (note: a prior version of this post incorrectly listed Baba Joon’s as hailing from San Diego).
Chocolate. Sale. Gluten-free. Ahh, life is good.
