As a market lead in Europe, Schar products are pretty popular in the UK and across Europe and now the company looks to become an even more popular gluten-free brand across the United States. The US subsidiary of the large Italian gluten-free company is opening it’s first gluten free facility in Swedesboro, New Jersey.
Dr. Schar USA was first incorporated in 2007 but this 60,000 square foot facility will be their first facility in the United States. That’s a lot of space for gluten-free bread!
Celiacs won’t have to worry about cross contamination issues in production as this gluten free facility will adhere to the same strict standards in terms of gluten content that all of the Schar facilities around the world follow. The lack of a nation-wide standard for what ‘gluten free’ should mean is a big problem in the US but the Schar facility will comply with the 20ppm or less maximum gluten content standard set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Many celiacs, including myself, are pushing for this to finally become the standard for products labeled as gluten-free in the US. It is already the standard, and has been for years, in various other countries around the world such as the UK, Australia and Argentina.
Dr. Schar’s parent company based in Italy invested a lot of money (upward of $15 million) in this new American Facility. The company, which makes around 300 products in Europe, currently offer 33 products in the US. Hopefully with the opening of this new facility, we will see even more tasty and safe gluten-free products being introduced into the gluten-free market.
