Gluten-Free Market Growing Like Crazy!

By Laura (The Gluten-Free Traveller)

You may be finding more and more gluten-free products on grocery store shelves these days but just wait, there are a whole lot more coming your way. U.S sales of gluten-free products are expected to exceed $6.6 billion by 2017! That’s a whole lot of gluten-free food!

The “Gluten-Free Foods and Beverages in the US” report from Packaged Facts found that the gluten-free market has been growing at a much faster rate than anticipated and will reach $4.2 billion by the end of 2012. Over the last four years, 2008-2012, there has been a 28% increase in the production of gluten-free products. 15% of overall sales were in the snack and granola bar category.

So why such a huge increase in the demand for gluten-free products?

As well as increasing diagnosis rates of celiac disease and food allergies, there is also a growing awareness of these conditions amongst patients, doctors and the general population. The availability of more and better gluten-free products and friends and family choosing to eat gluten-free to support loved ones are also contributing to this fast expanding market.

Add to this the current gluten-free trend with celebrities and the general population going gluten-free for weight-loss purposes and you’ve got a huge percentage of the population eating gluten-free.

A consumer survey by Packaged Facts in August of this year showed that 18% of adults are now buying or consuming foods labeled as gluten-free. In October 2010 the figure was 15%.

  1. I am a 50 year old female & have a good amount of medical issues. I have all of the following: IBS, over 150 UTI’S in the past 3 1/2 years. I had gone to see my family doctor on the Friday before the Labor Day weekend and she & told where my pain was, she thought it might have been a UTI so she called in a script for an antiboitic for the weekend, also gave me a paper to get a cat scan possibility if the medicine did not help which it wasn’t so on Tues my doctor called to see if I was feeling any better, I told her NO, so she say to stop the medicine & get the CT. I was able to go the next day @9am was called by my doctors to tell me I had a kidney stone got an appt.with a Urologist within 2 days then within 4 days I had it taken care of. Then the beginning of this year in January I was starting to look like I was looking between 3 to 5 months pregnant then on that weeks Friday I woke up and I needed my husband help to get my sweatpants-socks & shoes on since I was so bloated that I looked like I was over 9 months pregnant. Luckily I had a GI appt. that morning, I was in so much pain my GI had me go to the Er to get an xray to find out if it was just gas or inpacted with stool which it was so I was admitted for 4 days. They tried 2 enema’s, 1/2 bottle Magnesium Citrate none of them helped so when I got to my room they gave me a Duculax suppsotorie. They also did a CT & MRI as I have MS & Gasperisis. So when I was released my GI doctor put me on a non-gluetin diet and still having issues.
