Dum Dum’s Lollypops Still Gluten-Free After All These Years

My youngest child gets her hair cut at the local kiddie salon. They do a great job and at the end of the appointment she receives a Dum Dum. I’m sure you know what these small lollypops are. Frankly, they’re a childhood favorite. And they come in 16 flavors (who knew?!) including Watermelon, Strawberry, Cherry, Grape, Blue Raspberry, Root Beer, Sour Apple, Cream Soda, Butterscotch, Cotton Candy, Bubble Gum, Mango, Orange, Blueberry and Fruit Punch.




As it turns out they’re also gluten-free. Spangler, their manufacturer, also makes gluten-free Candy Canes, Saf-T-Pops and Circus Peanuts.

Saf-T-Pops are known as the “lollipop with the loop” and the “doctor’s pop”. It is the only pop with the fiber cord loop handle, and each pop is individually wrapped – handle and all!

The Spangler Candy Company is a family-owned business in Bryan, Ohio that has been making candy since 1906. Its current CEO is a fourth-generation family member and the company’s manufacturing facility covers more than 500,000 square feet.

In fact, Spangler takes its gluten-free business so seriously that it has a rather long web page devoted to explaining it.

How great to know that a long-time children’s favorite is also gluten- and allergen-free.

  1. When I was kid growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, the only candies that I could safely eat were Dum Dums and Lifesavers. My friends and family used to buy them just for me. There probably were other candies out there that I could have safely eaten, but it was too hard to get information about food allergens back then.
