Mariposa’s gluten-free kitchen can be found in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland. At this location is also their first retail bakeshop. Luckily for both San Franciscans and tourists headed to this amazing city, Mariposa also has a store in the Ferry Terminal Building where customers can expect to find all sorts of yummy breads and hand-crafted goodies.

Getting that Gluten-Free Glow

gluten free cosmeticsOne heavily debated component Celiac’s are constantly forced to reckon with is the do or don’t of gluten-free cosmetics. Some Celiac’s are adamant about cutting out gluten for EVERYTHING in order to avoid painful skin rashes and outbreaks that can occur. For others, their autoimmune disease is just of their gut, with painful symptoms only manifesting themselves due to the food they’re ingesting.

Recently, I read an article explaining this discrepancy. As we all know, Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease. Therefore, there can be varying degrees of severity, and much like the flu, can have various strains. As such, some Celiac’s suffer from a strain labeled Click to continue reading »

Organicville | Triumph Dining Product Review

TeriyakiOrganicvilleLGIn our continued search for safe and delicious gluten-free products, we came across Organicville, a maker of organic sauces, dressings and condiments.

Whilst many condiments are thought of as gluten-free, many have added flavors, colors, emulsifiers or spices which may be gluten containing. Even in those with no gluten containing ingredients, there is frequently the threat of cross contamination in production. For these reasons it’s exciting to find a full range of gluten free condiments!

All Organicville products are gluten-free and certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). Their Click to continue reading »

Are Americans Being Duped by a Gluten-Free Label?

A recent study found that 30% of American adults are tempted to try alabel-gluten-free_300 gluten-free diet – the highest percentage since the consumer research firm, NDP Group, began following the trend in 2009. All healthy eating “habits” seem to go through cycles. From low-fat diets, to avoiding carbohydrates on Atkins, over 100 years of dieting has certainly seen the ebb and flow of what is deemed “healthful” eating. Interestingly enough, the health fad of today seems to be the gluten-free diet.

But, as I’ve mentioned on this blog before, is this trend in “losing weight” on a GF diet really about cutting out the gluten, or is it more about dumping the processed foods that are so often saturated or cross-contaminated with the dreaded protein?

It is no secret to Celiacs that going gluten-free is often about more than just swapping out wheat bread for gluten-free bread. Though it’s great there are some viable gluten-free products out there (especially when kids have to go without the flour), the reason many people are able to heal their Click to continue reading »
