Berkeley is lucky to have a few great gluten-free cafes and restaurants and now it has Sanctuary, a vegan, gluten-free bistro which opened its doors August 1.
Owners of the bistro are Barry and Jennifer Hones Horton, who also run the vegan catering business, Local Love. Their goal with this new venture is to offer delicious, healthy options for meat eaters as well as vegans.
The menu sounds pretty interesting. Here are some of highlights.
*Butternut Squash Risotto topped with Onion Rings served with Braised Kale and a Chili Vinaigrette
*Wild Mushroom Raviolis served in a Pumpkin Cream sauce topped with a Truffle Oil and Crispy Sage Leaves
* Gluten-Free Pancake Stack with layers of mascarpone cheese, Fresh Fruit compote and whipped topping.
Desserts include Bananas Foster with Ice Cream, Peanut Butter Cup Parfaits and Raw Pear Cheesecake.
You can check out their full brunch, lunch and dinner menus, as well as hours of operation, on their website. Sanctuary’s food is sustainable, local and organic. Five percent of their profits go to local animal sanctuaries.
