In a new development that’s sure to excite gluten-free bakers everywhere, General Mills (which makes many GF cereals) has come out with a line of gluten-free Betty Crocker mixes. A Gluten Free Guide posts their letter to her about the details of each product. Available for consumption are Betty Crocker Gluten Free Yellow Cake Mix, Betty Crocker Gluten Free Devil’s Food Cake Mix, Betty Crocker Gluten Free Chocolate Chunk Brownies, and Betty Crocker Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix. The products will begin national distribution this June.
The women at Kill.The.Gluten have already managed to get their hands on the mixes and have some great reviews on their site. The verdict: the brownie (pictured above) and the devil’s food cake were awesome, perfect, and taste just like the original. The chocolate chip cookies were great except that the chocolate chips were too small—easily fixable by adding extra chocolate chips. Yellow cake is last to be made, so tune back into their blog for the results.

I have found all four mixes at Rays Apple Market in Clay Center. While I was there wondering about the icing I called the 800 number on the cake mix box from my cell phone. I was told by a representitive that gluten is not hidden in the current ingridient listing and the icings are expected to be labled gluten free this fall (09). My son is so excited!!!
I was skeptical that these mixes were any good. But one day I passed by them at the grocery store and couldn’t resist them because of the price. My kids loved them AND their non GF friends loved them too. I will no longer buy the more expensive brands at the silly over priced health food stores. Our grocery bills are over the top with buying over price gluten free products. Thank you Betty Crocker for giving Celiacs a wonderful tasting, reasonably priced product! Now I can share with the neighbor kids without feeling like I’m sharing gold!
I just made ice cream sanwiches w/BC gluten free chocolate chip cookies and sugar free ice cream. Our 5 year old granddaughter has celiac and she is diabetic.Everyone knows a Nana is supposed to make treats so I am very grateful for all the new gluten free mixes. Thank you!!
I have also looked for the gluten-free label on the BC frostings but so far haven’t seen them. Several of them are already gluten-free but you have to read the ingredient list until they change the label. We bought the cream cheese frosting recently (confirmed with BC is was gluten-free) and found it pretty bland. It’s gluten-free but homemade frosting is obviously ten times better. I’m giving the second can we bought away at a gluten-free event in case someone else likes it.
Betty Crocker Chocolate Chip cookies are great! I buy them by the case (6 boxes) from Amazon.com. Even the “wheaties” in my house love them.
