More Fun at the Fair | Triumph Dining

mutlnomah-county-fair-e61d7198847c5689On June 3 we posted  about trying to enjoy a summer fair or carnival while eating gluten free. I listed all of the fried and breaded foods I found at the fair and decided to eat before I left or once I got home.

Thanks to our great readers I now have some ideas of what types of foods to look for when I go to my next summer event. Here are some of the foods our readers said they felt safe eating at the fair:

–        Kettle corn

–        Baked potatoes

–        Chocolate dipped frozen fruit on a stick

–        Fresh fruit

–        Carmel apple Sunday

–        Cheese curds (not fried)

–        Rice

–        Tacos on corn tortillas (depending on filling)

–        Grilled meats (depending on seasoning and preparation)

–        Corn on the cob – it’s often grilled in its own husk and you can opt for the butter or not

–        Salad

–        French fries – specifically the station at the fair where you can watch them slicing the potatoes and tossing them in oil. And that’s all they make there so you don’t have to worry about cross contamination.

–        Ice cream or shakes if the flavors are appropriate and there’s no cross contamination from filling cones Continue reading “More Fun at the Fair | Triumph Dining”

Celiac Family Opens Gluten Free Bakery | Triumph Dining

We’re always happy to hear about the opening of a new gluten-free bakery, but we’re even more excited to share when there’s a personal story behind it.

Lisa and Tim Jermyn are a couple living in Lockport, NY. Seven years ago they found out that all three of their children had celiac disease. When they weren’t impressed with the taste or cost of gluten-free options in their area, they began experimenting with gluten-free baking themselves. When Lisa discovered she was pretty good at this gluten-free baking malarkey, she decided to quit her job as a teacher and open a 100% gluten-free bakery!

A Better Way opened in December, 2012. Jermyn says that the store’s sweet products are priced similarly to those in a traditional bakery whilst the breads and pizza crusts are a little more expensive.

As well as at the store, A Better Way products are also available in Niagara County Produce’s Lockport location; at the Bakehouse Market in Father Sam’s in Cheektowaga; and at Wilson’s Pizza Shop in Newfane, which uses their gluten-free crust. They also plan to open a café at some point.

“When I first started, I didn’t think we’d have so many retail customers,” she said. She thought she’d be selling wholesale, but she laughed, “I couldn’t keep the people out.”

A Better Way location and hours:

6429 Dysinger Rd, Lockport, NY 14094

Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm

Saturday 10am-3pm

Van’s Natural Foods Sandwich Bars, Chips and Crackers | Triumph Dining Product Review

Triumph Dining review of Van's PB&J Sandwich Bars Although it’s May and many of our New Year’s resolutions are pretty much non-existent by now, we can still get back on track when it comes to eating healthy. Here’s a new snack food to help us do so. Van’s Natural Foods, one of the biggest healthy, frozen, breakfast foods companies, launched a new snack bar collection earlier this year with gluten-free multigrain snack chips and PB&J sandwich bars.

The Multigrain Chips come in Nacho, Nacho, Man! and Might Good BBQ flavors. They are made with brown rice, oats, millet, quinoa and amaranth. Each serving comes in at only 130 calories and 18g of whole grains. These very flavorful chips are just what you would want in a snack- crispy, crunchy, not greasy, and no “bad”ingredients! While the BBQ is a bit more authentic in flavor, both bags are great to have around when you’re craving something crunchy and delicious. We can’t wait to see what other flavors they come out with.
